Ask three copier salespeople whether you should lease or buy, and you'll get three confident answers — usually whichever one pays their commission. Here's how we actually think about it.
When leasing makes sense
Leasing keeps your cash free and rolls service, parts, and toner into one predictable monthly number. For most growing Orange County offices, that predictability matters more than ownership. Technology also moves — a lease means you're never stuck owning a machine your business outgrew.
- Cash flow: no large up-front outlay; one budgetable line item.
- Service built in: maintenance and supplies are typically bundled.
- Flexibility: upgrade or right-size when the term ends.
When buying makes sense
If your volume is stable, your needs are simple, and you'll keep the machine for many years, buying — especially certified pre-owned — can cost meaningfully less over its life. There's no financing cost and no term to manage. The tradeoff: service is on you unless you add a maintenance agreement, and the capital comes out of your pocket now.
What we'd tell you in the room
Every recommendation should be traceable to something you told us. Your volumes, your cash position, your growth plans — those decide lease vs. buy, not a sales quota. Sometimes we recommend the smaller machine. Sometimes we recommend keeping what you have. That's the point of being an advisor instead of a vendor.
